Outrageously overpriced dinner. Chocolates that will pack on the pounds (that I just dropped as a New Year’s resolution). And flowers that will be dead before the week is over. All things that describe the typical Valentine’s Day are not for this non-conformist. For this girl, it’s a simple approach that works best for me. Spend some time with me. Quality time! Let’s see and do something that we may have not done before. Here are a few ideas for locals in Henderson, Las Vegas looking to keep the mood simplistic and meaningful.

Challenge your Valentine to a playful game of trivia…

Visit the Clark County Heritage Museum and see who was right as you learn about the Henderson, Las Vegas, and Boulder City area that we call home. Spend anywhere from 1-2 hours touring the museum, learning about local history with your sweetheart (or family- there are plenty of activities that will interest the older and younger kids alike.) The Museum sits on “a 30-acre site that features a modern exhibit hall with a timeline exhibit about southern Nevada from pre-historic to modern times and a collection of restored historic buildings that depict daily life from different decades in Las Vegas, Boulder City, Henderson, and Goldfield.” Plan your visit any day of the week from 9:00am to 4:30pm. Take your Valentine by the Hand…

Handholding on a romantic walk or hike around River Mountain Loop Trail is a great place to be outdoors enjoying Vegas’ wonderful February weather for Valentine’s Day while enjoying nature and various outdoor activities. Spend quality time together taking in the “scenic views, plentiful wildlife and the vast beauty only the Mojave Desert can offer.” Maybe walking is not part of your picnic plans, and you would rather challenge your love to a race to the end of the bike trail? There are plenty of “paved and concrete segments 12 feet in width, for hikers and road cyclists. River Mountains Loop Trail is approximately 34 miles in length and surrounds the River Mountains connecting Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Hoover Dam, Henderson, Boulder City and the rest of the Las Vegas Valley.” Pack your picnic meal and enjoy the glorious views and outdoor setting as you cuddle up to reflect on your time together and what a true loving relationship means. Be her knight in shining armor, and take her horseback riding on the equestrian trails. (Bring the family for a family friendly Valentine’s Day delight.) For the Love Birds…

Visit the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, it’s known for its 140 acres and being the "Best Place For Bird Watching" in Desert Companion's 3rd Annual Best of the City. Will you spot the Love Birds? Love Doves? Birds of Paradise? The preserve is home to thousands of migratory waterfowl as well as numerous resident desert birds and temporary winged visitors as the preserve is located on the eastern edge of the Pacific Migratory Flyway.  This time of year you can expect to see “many species of duck such as the northern shoveler, green wing, cinnamon and blue wing teal, pintail, bufflehead, and one of the most beautiful of all North American ducks, the wood duck. Winter is also an ideal time to see geese (Canada, snow and Ross's) and returning tundra swan. The Preserve also provides habitat for a variety of raptors including peregrine falcons, northern harriers and both Cooper's and sharpshinned hawks. Desert specialties and resident species include verdin, Abert's towhee, Gambel's quail, greater roadrunner, and crissal thrasher.”

With nine ponds available for bird watching, surrounded by both paved and soft surfaces alike and paved paths, approximately 3/4 of a mile long, that is accessible by wheelchair, the soft surfaces are mostly level and allow for easy walking.” (Walking together-yet another reason to hold your Valentine by the hand.) When you visit, plan on doing a lot of walking and allow yourself adequate time to visit the area. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and comfortable, sturdy shoes so you can enjoy the atmosphere fully.  It’s suggested that you bring water, a hat, and wear sunscreen and of course, all bird watchers know to bring your binoculars, and for those love birds new to bird watching the preserve has some available for loan. Why not bring a picnic mean? Finish off the date by stopping into the gift shop and treating your sweetie to a memento that will symbolize your love and create a memory of the Valentine’s Day you spent quality time together. 

For the Valentine that knows nothing about bird watching, the preserve offers educational programs for all ages (another great family friendly Valentine’s Day activity). The preserve is located within the Water Reclamation Facility located at 350 E. Galleria Dr., near the intersection of Galleria Drive and Boulder Highway (keep an eye out for the signs in the medians).  Plan your Valentine’s Day Date around the preserve’s open hours, because they fluctuate throughout the year and are open December, January & February: 7am-2pm; March, April & May: 6am-2pm; June, July & August: 6am-Noon; September, October & November: 6am-2pm. It’s important to know that last entry in the facility is 30 minutes before closing.
